The Benny Hill Show was a English comedy/variety show that ran as a series of specials between 1957 and 1989, starting out on the BBC and later getting acquired by Thames Television (ITV), whose episodes became more popular internationally.
Briefly formatted as a situation comedy from 1962 to 1963, its style was more American burlesque and vaudeville with musical segments and comedy sketches with interstitial comedy bits or "quickies" (brief humorous sketches) between acts.
Much of the so-called "quickies" featured humorous scenes between married couples, surreal moments beyond reality, phony bloopers and acting gaffes and examples of male hubris followed by defeat. The show is possibly best known for the Hill's Angels, a troupe of beautiful female actors, dancers, singers and entertainers who dance in sexy provocative musical segments set on various themes who also starred frequently in the sketches.
The most popular among them was Jane Leeves, who went on to a vastly successful TV and film career in the United States.
