In the early 1990s, Russell Peters regularly performed as a DJ in various locations across Toronto. After an encounter with the comedian George Carlin, Peters was convinced to pursue a comedy career. In 2007, he was able to host one of Carlin’s last shows before his death.

Russell Peters notes that his 2004 comedy special on the television show Comedy Now! was the turning point of his career.

While many enjoyed the special when it aired, it was the special's presence on YouTube that showcased Peters' talents to the whole world.

This led to his record-breaking performance at Scotiabank Arena in 2007.
